The EMBER Study is conducted by the Children's Health and Environment Program (CHEP) at the University of Queensland.

The tragedies of bushfires unfolding globally, including Australia highlight the significance of our research project in protecting affected communities. The aim of this study is to understand how the smoke from prescribed burns and bushfires affect indoor air quality and whether short-term exposure to bushfire smoke causes adverse health effects. In addition, we are interested to investigate which household characteristics can determine poor indoor air quality throughout the burn period so that we can protect the vulnerable population. To do this, we monitor your air quality, collect samples of household dust, and do some non-invasive health tests.

Since prescribed burns and bushfires are unpredictable and weather dependent, having a contact list of participants will help us in future recruitment. This registration survey allows us to add you to our contact list so we can contact you if there is a burn in your area.

We hypothesise that the smoke exposure from the burns may have a different impact on children compared to adults.
